Flautist

Stephen Preston is a pioneering musician and choreographer who played a key role in the growth of early music in the UK and abroad. His professional career began while still studying the flute at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Early in his career he developed an interest in historical music performance practice and he taught himself to play baroque and classical flutes. Subsequently he became one of the first professional musicians in England to perform on original instruments, a founder member of the leading period instrument ensembles and orchestras. He rapidly gained a worldwide reputation through concert performances and recordings. He teaches at three of London's four leading music colleges and gives regular master classes in the USA.

Choreographer

Since 1981, in parallel with his musical career, he has worked as a choreographer. As a choreographer he has worked at the Royal Opera House, the Barbican and at the South Bank in London, He has recently been working in Madrid and Athens. Stephen has also choreographed and directed for British and Swiss TV. His first dance company gave many highly successful performances throughout Europe and the UK, and for television. Has has received critical accolades for the quality and dramatic consistency of his choreography for the English Bach Festival productions. His new company, MZT, has just received plaudits for a ground breaking performance at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Dance Company

In 1981, pursuing his investigation into baroque dance, he founded the London Baroque Dance Theatre. This dance company gave many highly successful performances throughout Europe and the UK, and for television. He has received high praise in the UK and throughout Europe for the quality and dramatic consistency of his choreography for English Bach Festival productions. In 1991 he started a new company MZT, with the dual aim of exploring historical music and dance with much greater freedom and allowing him to use the talents of his dancers more appropriately. Recent performances by the company have led him further down the path of exploration and experimentation.
