Joined Edinburgh String Quartet "1960-1965", then returned to London to join the London Oboe Quartet, formed by Janet Craxton, the Nash Ensemble "1968-1979", the Vesuvius Ensemble and London Virtuosi with James Galway, Anthony Camden, John Georgiadis and Douglas Cummings. Performed on nearly fifty gramophone recordings with chamber ensembles, plus numerous other recordings, broadcasts and television appearances in UK and many other countries.
Became member of the English Chamber Orchestra and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, and was the first principal viola in the London Sinfonietta and in the London Bach Orchestra. Invited to become a professor at the Royal College of Music in 1967, becoming string faculty adviser in 1989. Awarded fellowship of the Royal College of Music in 1991. Became head of strings at the RCM in 1992.
Currently, Brian Hawkins is involved in recording, film and television session work including the National Philharmonic Orchestra. Chamber music commitments include the Gagliano Trio.
All aspects of teaching, examining and adjudicating are covered. Masterclasses and coaching on chamber courses have involved visits to many countries including Germany, France, Spain and Hong-Kong, and several visits to Australia.
Consultation lessons are given, specially in preparation for Conservatory entrance. Specialist advanced coaching for individuals or chamber groups is available also, particularly for examinations, competitions and auditions including orchestral.
