James began singing as a chorister at St Paul’s Cathedral continuing his studies at the RNCM and RAM. James made his Royal Opera, Covent Garden debut as an Apprentice Die Meistersinger von Nuremberg in 2002 later joining the Young Artists Programme. Whilst there James sang roles including Pong Turandot, Albazar Il turco in Italia and Roderigo Otello, covering Arturo Lucia di Lammermoor, Cassio Otello and Ernesto Don Pasquale. More recently James has sung Novice Billy Budd, First Commissioner The Carmelites for English National Opera ‘Push’ by David Bruce for Tete a Tete Opera and Lenski Eugene Onegin for Opera by Definition. On the concert platform he has recorded The Love Songs of Hafiz Szymanowski for the BBC Symphony Orchestra and made his Proms debut in 2006. Future plans include Pinkerton (Madam Butterfly) for Raymond Gubbay at the Royal Albert Hall, Mozart’s Requiem with the LSO and Albert Herring in Salzburg.
