Tangled features the song Three Days in Paris, a song about being in love in France, "walking in sunflower fields" and climbing cathedrals only to find that "the bells wouldn't ring". It also features a lush ballad, Blue, and the rich harmony of Melancholy. All in all, Tangled explores the depths of human love, showing how tangled up emotions can be, ranging from an ode to divine beauty, Aphrodite, to love that is utterly lost in All the Mornings of the World.
Johnson, a natural, intuitive musician, recorded and played all the instruments on his cd, including guitar, piano, bass, and sax. He captures the passion and artistry of each musical idea, as if each song was a fine painting. His music has been said to "induce concentration."
Johnson was born in Tampa, Florida on September 26, 1969. He studied piano at an early age, learned to play guitar at the age of 15, and sang in several choirs up to and including college. After graduating from Guilford College with a degree in English Literature, he attended Full Sail Center for the Recording Arts and studied sound engineering.
Johnson has lived in Atlanta for the past six years, performing at venues such as Eddie's Attic, the Red Light Café, and the Freightroom. He has also been a regular performer at the Inman Park Spring Festival and the Candler Park Music and Arts Festival for several years. His song Way to Blue, was recently featured on Oasis Acoustic Sampler #23. He is currently available for booking.
Sound Samples can be found at his website (above).
REVIEWS AND LETTERS
"Atlanta-based singer & songwriter Victor Johnson's first solo
cd, TANGLED, is dedicated to the memory of Nick Drake. Drake's
influence is primarily spotted in Johnson's nature-oriented and
melancholic lyrics, while his singing voice might be likened to an
American version of a classical trained Morrissey. Add David
Sylvianesque song-titles like BENEATH THE SILVER MOON and we are
bound to have high expectations. The result is not disappointing: the
beautiful harmonies, the unexpected chord progressions and the
inspired lyrics live up to every part of the description. For the
next album, I would personally wish for some more "rough edges" in
the deliverance and more variation in the arrangements, but it's
nevertheless a promising debut."

"Victor Johnson, "Tangled" - This CD is really a gem! Obviously
with a name like "waytoblu", you know Victor is going to be
influenced by Nick Drake, but there's some great alternative tuning
and some folk/jazz arrangements that are very tasty. Plus really cool
artwork on it of tangled, twisted roots...I like this disc a lot, it
might just sneak into my top 10 for '99...and Victor has shared his
lyrics with us, so I don't have to add anything on that."
