Born in Madrid, she studied guitar, solfege and harmony in the Royal Conservatory of Madrid. She studied vocal interpretation and accompaniment with the guitarist and composer Jorge Cardoso, classical singing with Angeles Chamorro and Concha Donaque, she took lessons in jazz singing with Connie Philip and studied voice otophony and interpretation with Miguel Cuevas.
She belonged to the Ateneo Choir in Madrid and the Chamber Choral of the "Comunidad de Madrid", both conducted by Miguel Groba.
She is the niece of the lyrical singer Teresa Berganza and, although she studied classical music, soon adapted her personal and non-parallel style in the repertoire of the French Chanson and Brazilian music.
She took part in the III Autumn Festival in Madrid performing in the Spanish light opera the "Zapatera Prodigiosa" by Federico Garcia Lorca in the Albéniz Theatre. She also appeared in the Festival Europa Cantant IX in Strassbourg, with the "Cantata de las Naciones Unides" by C. Halffter; in the Festival of Basque Songs in Renteria, with the guitarist Eudardo Baranzano.
Since 1988 she has offered recitals, both in duo and in quartet, accompanied by the pianist Horacio Icasto in different auditoriums, clubs and cultural centers in Spain, Switzerland and France.
In 1996 she won the second prize in the prestigious competition "Vive la Reprise" organized by the Centre Chanson d'Expresion Française in the Vanves Theatre of Paris. She was the first non French speaking contestant to reach such an honor in the history of the award.
At the present moment she combines teaching and performing, with an almost constant presence on the concert halls of Spain and abroad.
Paloma Berganza has one of the most interesting voices in the Spanish musical world and is undoubtedly the best singer of French Chanson in the country, as well as one of it's proudest assets abroad. She, herself, is a tribute to this genre.
