American/British mezzo-soprano Sarah Stone followed her calling in the world of classical singing after a successful career as a professional soccer player and sports commentator for Brazilian television. She began musical studies in São Paulo, Brazil, where she studied piano with international concert pianist Yara Amaral. After beginning her Bachelors of Music as a pianist she was converted to singing after being involved in a performance of Mendelssohn’s Elijah. A recent graduate of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music with a Masters of Music in Voice Performance, she studied with and Patricia Wise and Patricia Stiles. Her operatic roles with the IU Opera Theater include Gertrude in Romeo and Juliet, Filippyevna in Eugene Onegin, and Effie in The Ballad of Baby Doe.
Ms. Stone was a fellow with the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Tanglewood Music Center in 2005, where she had the opportunity to study under the guidance of such artists as Phyllis Curtin, Dawn Upshaw, Bill Sharp, William Bolcolm and Maestro James Levine. At Tanglewood she also performed under the baton of Craig Smith in a critically acclaimed performance of J. S. Bach’s Cantata BWV 201: Der Streit Zwischen Phoebus und Pan.
Sarah Stone performs frequently in recitals and oratorios through out the Midwest. Recent engagements include the alto solos in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Saint-Saëns’ Christmas Oratorio with the Indiana State University Masterworks Chorale.
Ms. Stone is an advocate of contemporary music. She recently premiered Brazilian composer Marcos Balter's Ne'e at the 2005 Tanglewood Summer Music Festival. She is also a regular collaborator with Indiana-based composer Daniel Powers, and recently recorded 10 of his songs on his debut Spring & Fall: Songs and Instrumental Works of Daniel Powers.
