The firm was founded in 1895 by Frederick Phelps. Initially it manufactured and sold pianos in its workshops and showrooms in Kentish Town, then a flourishing centre for the Piano Trade. By the mid 20th century production of new pianos had ceased, but restoration and sales continued with other instruments, sheet music and accessories being added to the range. In 1986 Phelps' second son finally retired and sold the business to someone who saw the potential in turning the general music side into a specialist violin business, and asked Rachel Douglas to join him in this. Since the Phelps Pianos and Frederick Phelps Ltd. have been two separate companies, with the latter specialising in fine instruments of the violin family.

In 1988 Rachel Douglas bought the violin shop, separating it completely from its sister piano business. As the Company expanded it moved into a large Victorian house at 67 Fortess Road to give space for all its activities. Now - as for more than one hundred years - the Company's aim is to provide a professional and personalised service for musicians of all abilities.
