Flamenco Cajon
|
The Flamenco Cajón(or Percussion Box) has been increasing greatly in popularity as a percussion instrument in its own right. It probably originated in Peru (there is a sister instrument also popular in Cuba).
The instrument itself is used to mark the complex rhythms of Flamenco musical structure, and the best instruments have front panels with the corners left free in order to increase the subtlety of sounds that can be made.. It is played by skilful striking with the hands in various positions over the soundboard (often using the heel of one foot as a further control over the timbres produced). Guitar strings are fixed to the underside of the sounding plate (as in a snare drum)
Sandra La Espuelita is one of the only true "cajonistas" available in the UK.
