CONTACT: The Oxford Philomusica |
The Oxford Philomusica was founded in August 1998 and has since become one of the leading orchestras in the UK and the most significant musical resource in Oxford. In October 2002, it was appointed the first ever Orchestra in Residence at The University of Oxford. As a recognition of its work, the Oxford Philomusica was honoured at a reception at 10 Downing Street.
The Oxford Philomusica’s Patron is Vladimir Ashkenazy who has appeared with the orchestra, both as soloist and conductor, on a number of occasions.
In August 1999, the Oxford Philomusica presented the first Oxford Philomusica International Piano Festival. Described by the Oxford Times as "the most significant annual musical event in the city", the Piano Festival has since become an annual feature in the orchestra’s diary of events attracting a global reputation for the peerless quality of the teaching and masterclass opportunities it offers to young musicians.
As part of its University Residency, the Oxford Philomusica is involved in a number of schemes for education, offering students a rare opportunity to train with professional musicians.
Education and community work, a central part of the orchestra's mission, takes place throughout the year with projects currently running at Wood Farm and the Radcliffe Hospitals. The Orchestra’s pioneering work at the Oxfordshire Hospitals has been awarded a major grant from Youth Music.
