La Camerata - Athens

The Friends of Music Orchestra

La Camerata was founded in 1991 by the Friends of Music Society. Greece had to have its own professional string ensemble, capable of presenting chamber music works as well as pieces belonging to different genres and styles at the highest possible level of performance. The orchestra is active nationwide and abroad. It is based in Athens, at the Athens Concert Hall

Its activities are supported by the Ministry of Culture, the Friends of Music Society and Eurobank, a particularly generous sponsor.

The orchestra consists now of thirty-three string and wind musicians and encompasses in its repertoire works spanning four centuries. It can sustain the widest possible repertoire, including works for string ensembles, and organize a variety of parallel activities through chamber music subgroups.

La Camerata has established itself as a significant cultural institution and is invariably praised by the press for its numerous activities which include: first performances of Greek and foreign composers; commissioning Greek composers to write new works; presenting composers unknown to the Greek public; hosting internationally renowned artists; promoting young artists; giving concerts and performances both countrywide and abroad, in England, Italy, Belgium, Austria, Cyprus; making recordings; holding lectures and workshops... In 1996 the orchestra was awarded the Music Prize of the Union of Greek Critics.

Besides performing in the Athens Concert Hall, participating in operas and in productions of occasional nature, like playing religious music for Christmas and Easter, the orchestra has embarked on a nationwide "Musical Tour": a three-year artistic and educational programme including concerts all over Greece.

C.D.'s recorded by La Camerata include a double one compiling works by Beethoven, Shostakovich and Skalkottas (BMG/RCA). In 1998 the orchestra inaugurated its collaboration with Agora record company. Five C.D.'s are launched into the market comprising works by Mikroutsikos, Mendelssohn, Saint-Saens / Hindemith, Skalkottas / Sicilianos and Martinu / Honegger.
