Based ased in Chiswick since 1996 and combining over 42 years practical experience, Matthew Coltman and Andrew Riley offer string players of all abilities, from child beginner to concert professional, the highest standards of personal attention and skill within a relaxed and informal atmosphere.

Matthew and Andrew's association began in 1974 when they commenced training at the Newark School of Violin Making. After graduating in 1977 Matthew joined the world famous firm ot W E. Hill & Sons where he acquired his skills as a bow-maker and repairer. Andrew went to work tor the highly respected Dietrich Kessler at Edward Withers Ltd, 22 Wardour Street. Over the next 5 years he gained wide experience in instrument repair and restoration.

In 1980 Matthew joined Andrew at Withers and over the following 3 years established his reputation as a exceptional maker of both modern and period bows. After running their own independent workshops for 14 years, Matthew and Andrew are working together again here at Matthew's shop in Chiswick.

The Kessler ethos of high standards of craftsmanship and personal service continue in this shop. The open plan style provides an informal atmosphere where customers can discuss their requirements with the craftsmen and see work in progress From a routine bow rehair or fingerboard shoot to large scale restoration you can be sure of the same prompt attention. Same day bow rehairs are available and routine instrument repairs can also be undertaken in one day. Bows can in be sent by post.

Players seeking to purchase an instrument or bow can be sure of an excellent selection. The strong emphasis on bow making and restoration lends a unique atmosphere to the workshops. Matthew makes a wide range of modern, classical and baroque bows modelled on the old masters.

All budgets are catered for.

Teachers particularly will find the professional adjustment of the student instruments stocked a great help in the crucial early days. Instruments and bows can be tried in the privacy and comfort of the practise room and may be taken away on approval.
