In 2001, Mauricio Vallina recorded his first CD with EMI CLASSICS INTERNATIONAL. This EMI Abbey Road recording, that has been released under the title of "Martha Argerich Presents Mauricio Vallina" received the highest nomination "CHOC" in the magazine "Le Monde de la Musique" and brought him great acclaim in Vienna, London and Paris. Mauricio Vallina (1970) began taking piano lessons at the age of seven in Havana, his native city, and in 1984 won a place at the Havana Conservatory, where he studied with Roberto Urbay. At the age of 16 he became the youngest prize winner at the UNEAC (Union of Cuban Writers and Artists) National Music Competition and one year later won the First Prize and the Special Prize for the best performance of Cuban music at the National Music Competition "Amadeo Roldán".
After graduating in Havana with a "Gold" Diploma and other major awards, he achieved a solid formation at the Moscow State "Tchaikovsky" Conservatory under the guidance of Henrietta Mirvis and Irina Plotnikova, before completing his studies at the Madrid Royal Conservatory of Music with Joaquín Soriano. In 1994 he was awarded the Second Prize and Special Prize for the best performance of Spanish music at the IX "José Iturbi" International Piano Competition in Valencia and two years later won the First Prize at the Gernika International Piano Competition.
Having concluded his academic studies, including the Master of Fine Arts from the Moscow State Conservatory, the enormous influence of Zenaida Manfugas and Martha Argerich has been an important catalyst for his development, and the prestigious International Piano Foundation in Como (Italy), where he had master classes with well known musicians as Alicia de Larrocha, Dimitri Bashkirov, Fou Tsong was an experience which brought his artistry to a new level.
Since 1990, Mauricio Vallina has given solo recitals, concerts with orchestras and made both radio and television broadcasts in Europe, South America, Asia and Australia. His musical tastes span wide, he performs a broad repertoire from Bach to contemporary works and even made the American Premiere of a Piano Concerto dedicated to him by the Colombian composer Arturo Cuellar.
He took part in several documentary films such as "Nelson Freire"- a brazilian production- and has been invited to appear at a number of prestigious international festivals, including "La Roque d'Anthon" in France (2000) "Beppu, Argerich's meeting point" in Japan (2001) Lugano festival "Argerich's project" in Switzerland (2002) and Schleswig-Holstein music festival in Germany (2002). He has performed with leading orchestras under the batons of Pavel Iadij, Howard Griffiths, Alexander Rabinovicht, Christoph Eschenbach… and as partner in piano duo with Martha Argerich he has performed in many countries.
