He studied for many years, piano and theory, with Wilma Graça, who was a legend in Brazil for her profound knowledge in music, and who taught many well known musicians such as Ivan Lins, Marcos Valle, Gilson Peranzeta, etc..
Later Mauricio studied with pianist Luiz Eça who gave him the knowledge and skills that prepared him for a professional career. Luiz Eça was the best Bossa Nova pianist that ever existed in Brazil.
When both teachers died, Mauricio was unable to find suitable substitutes for them and continued studying by himself.
For many years Mauricio worked as sound studio assistant making soundtracks for TV and had the opportunity to work beside Tom Jobim, Radamés Gnatalli and many other arrangers. So he began to write his own arrangements for orchestra and discovered that he had a new ability.
Although a pianist with a classical background, he is actually jazz influenced, believing jazz to be the classical music of the twentieth century. He plays in the Bossa Nova style which influences the jazz.
Also as a pianist he worked with Nelson Motta, a famous Brazilian poet, in venues including Nelson Motta's jazz clubs "African Bar" and "Noites Cariocas", in Rio de Janeiro, for 2 years in 1990/91.
Mauricio works in small formations such as duos of trumpet and piano, alto sax and piano, and trios such as drums, acoustic bass and piano; percussion, electric bass and piano.
For a bigger group he plays with the "Brazilian Seven": Three brasses, drums, bass, piano and vocal.
Gueiros has recorded three albums:
He is also working on personal projects with his partner Flavio Goulart, who has his own home studio called AudiomaKer.
Today Mauricio works as arranger, composer and pianist and lives in Rio de Janeiro.
Comment from Mauricio:
"Besides my own work, I'm very proud to have had the opportunity to work as a pianist accompanying the following Brazilian celebrities: Mariana Leporace (singer), Daude (singer), Tavynho Bonfa (composer, arranger, guitarist and singer). I also can't forget to mention my first professional work sharing an Album with this great composer, bassist and singer Fernando Leporace. I also wrote songs in partnership with Joao Donato who I think doesn't need introductions, as well as with the poet Abel Silva and with poet Jose de Carvalho and this is meaningful for me...
