The Northern Jazz Society's Wards Music Big band was formed in 1991. Initially the musical direction was undertaken by saxaphonist Jim Thorne until the recent arrival from Austrailia of Jim McMullen, an experienced conductor. |

Ages of the band range from 14 to 70. Young musicians from the Whangarei Youth Concert Band who are showing potential are given an opportunity to play with the band.
