The MJBO was founded in the summer of 2005 and has enjoyed great attendance from the very first rehearsal. The band was formed by Andrew Kerensky a local music teacher who wanted to establish a big band in the tradition of the Swing bands of the golden era but also incorporating modern popular music as well.
This community based band is open to all musicians of all ages who are keen to play great music in a band setting, the only way to improve is to come along regularly, you do need to be able to read music preferably to at least grade 3 standard or in the case of guitarists read chord sheets and drummers need to be able to read drum notation, although not all percussionists need to be readers. The band is presently made up of the following instruments:-
Saxophones of all shapes and sizes, Soprano, Alto, Tenor and even Baritone.
A couple of flutes.
Brass consists of trumpets, flugel horn, tenor and bass trombones.
The rhythm section has an electric guitarist, a bass guitarist, two regular drummers including south American conga drums and auxiliary percussion and the occasional pianist.
All instruments are welcome though so if you play something that you think will fit in come along.
We all rehearse between 10:30-12:30 on a Saturday morning at St Cuthberts church and community center just behind the Phoenix squash club off Newport roundabout in Middlesbrough.
