More than any other genre, JARRATINA emphasizes the relationship between language and music. Listening to JARRATINA is like time travelling. Their art is the transmission of our common past: stories, history and legends, through the captivating rhymes recollected from the oral tradition and put to music by Javier Velasco.
Jarratina grew out of a project on European folklore in 1985 at the Complutense University of Madrid. Since then, they have performed as both a quartet and quintet all over Europe, earning a gold medal as best folk group in the "Concurso de Participacion Cuidadana", organized by the Madrid City Hall. Consisting of guitar, vocals, harp, and violin, the overwhelming reception of their first three programs: the Spanish Romancero, the Traditional Britannic Ballads and the European Anthology of traditional Music, has lead to the creation of a Christmas program of Traditional European Music. Their repertoire with more than 180 songs draws traditional ballads from Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and Greece which are sung in their original language along with other minority languages such as Basque, Gallego, and Catalan.
Javier Velasco has been researching and performing traditional narrative Spanish and European folklore since 1985 and has arranged the 180 songs in JARRATINA'S repertory which were originally sung without instrumentation. With his solid classical education, he has combined his research into European folklore with his work in the Spanish Radio and Television Symphony Chorus and Orchestra where he has tenure. There is also a pedagogical side of his career, as well as sporadic appearances in musical theater, Opera and Zarzuela (Spanish light Opera).

He was a founding member of the Monteverdi Chorus where he expanded his repertoire. His work as a soloist in "Jarratina" has been characterized by the research and diffusion of ancient music, as well as music from the oral tradition.
