Stephen Powell was born in Birmingham in 1961 and studied piano, violin, viola and oboe at school. He attended the University of Wales in Bangor where he continued his piano studies with Ann Rees and composition with William Mathias.

After graduating with a B.Mus from Bangor, Stephen joined the postgraduate Piano Accompaniment Course at Trinity College of Music in London.
