Emerging film composer and multi-instrumentalist Cody Westheimer grew up in Santa Barbara, California. A graduate of the music composition program at USC's Thornton School of Music, Cody composed music for over 40 student films and other projects during his four year stay. His senior year he participated in the USC Film Scoring Program. During this time he won the ASCAP Harry Warren Endowed Scholarship for excellence in music for film.
After graduating he was selected to attend the prestigious ASCAP Filmscoring Workshop in 2001. Today, Westheimer works out of his extensive music studio which includes an elaborate array of MIDI, recording and mixing equipment. His recent feature credits include "Entre Llamas / Into the Flames," "Chinango" and "The Beat." (Official Selection Sundance 2003)
In addition to feature films, Cody has scored dozens of short films and several television ads and programs. Whenever possible he incorporates his knowledge of world music into his compositions. He began studying the Japanese Shakuhachi nearly 6 years ago. Perhaps one of the most interesting elements in Westheimer's music is his seemless blend of World instruments and concepts with Western counterpoint.
Along with his work in film, Cody has been quite successful in the concert realm. His compositions have been performed by such groups as the USC Symphony, Santa Barbara Symphony and the Los Angeles Movie Orchestra. In 2002, Westheimer was awarded the prestigious ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award for his piece, "Bamboo Leaves."
Other than writing music, he enjoys playing ice hockey, yoga, drinking Dr Pepper, hiking and nature photography. Check out his website - link at top.
