Active as a composer, violinist and improviser, Carmel Raz attended the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin, Germany, before continuing her studies at the University of Chicago.
Her pieces have been performed in New York, Chicago, Cincinnati, Berlin, Saarbrucken, and Tel-Aviv by ensembles and artists such as Cliff Colnot, the Pacifica Quartet, Musica Donum Dei, Vox Novus, members of eighth blackbird, the Fire Escape Film Festival, the NY Miniaturist Ensemble and the Music06 quartet. Honors include a 2007 Meet the Composer Grant, a Susan and Ford Schumann Scholarship, a Carnegie Fellowship, first place in the 2006 Musica Donum Dei Composition Competition, a Mellon Graduate Achievement Award, as well as support from the America- Israel Cultural Foundation and the Tel-Aviv Academy of Music. In 2006, Carmel was appointed resident composer of the Millennium Chamber Players, a chamber ensemble based in Chicago. Among her upcoming projects are commissions by the Aspen Music Festival, Musica Nova Israel, and the Van Buren String Quartet, as well as world premiers in Chicago (Dal Niente), New York City (American Composer’s Association), and San Diego (NOISE Ensemble).
As a violinist, Carmel has collaborated with composers such as Evan Ziporyn, Osvaldo Golijov, Alvin Curran, Shulamit Ran and Helmut Lachenmann on their works. World premiers include Lachemann’s “Grido Double” at the 2005 Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, and Ziporyn’s Sulvasutra at Carnegie Hall (2006). She has performed in the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, serving as concertmaster in 2001 and 2002, the Berliner Symphoniker, das Symphonie Orchester Berlin, and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, appearing across Europe and Asia under the baton of Daniel Barenboim, Ingo Metzmacher, Pierre Boulez and Claudio Abbado. Her current musical activities include an active career as an improvising Jazz / Klezmer violinist, performing with world music ensembles such as the Silk Road Ensemble, Klezmer trumpeter Paul Brody, Honga Longa, Gene Coleman’s Ensemble N_JP and soul singer Motep, with whom she will collaborate on a CD in 2007.Back to the Index Pages for : Composers - Violinists - Jazz Musicians
