Gerard Power was born in Waterford. He studied composition with Fintan O'Carroll and Eric Sweeney in Waterford and Hormoz Farhat in Dublin, graduating with an M.Litt in composition from Trinity College Dublin in 1995. In 2000 he successfully completed a DPhil in composition at the University of York, England, where his teachers included Roger Marsh and David Blake. He has also studied with Professor John Eaton at the University of Chicago and attended the Darmstadt International Summer School for New Music in Germany. His compositional output to date includes orchestral, chamber, instrumental and choral works. Among these are Gelert (1999) for chamber ensemble premiered by Concorde in 1999; Top Quark (1999) for wind band premiered by the University of York Symphony Orchestra; and Cyclopsleep (1999) for symphony orchestra which has been selected as part of the Irish submission for the 2002 ISCM World Music Days in Hong Kong.
Awards include the Vinson Award and a doctoral studentship from the University of York and an Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon composers' postgraduate study award. Further information on this and other composers is available on the CMC web site at <www.cmc.ie>.
