Praised as "World-class musicians" by the leading German newspaper Frankfurter Rundschau, the Duo was founded in 1999 by two Israeli musicians, the violist and violinist Shmuel Katz and the pianist Dmitri Shteinberg. Coached by Michael Tree of the Guarneri Quartet and, as a part of a larger ensemble, Isidore Cohen, it has soon achieved a high professional level. It started off with a memorable recital at the Manhattan School of Music, where Mr. Katz played the first half on the violin and the second half on the viola. Currently, their repertoire ranges from French and German Baroque Music to Shostakovich and Hindemith, including a number of arrangements, made by the musicians themselves.
In March 2001 the Duo was invited by the Canada-Israel Cultural Foundation to perform in the National Library of Ottawa. After this performance was critically acclaimed in the Ottawa Citizen, the musicians became the first recipients of the newly established Pinchas Zukerman Music Education Fund. They returned to Ottawa to study with Maestro Zukerman in the National Arts Centre Young Artists Program in July 2001.
In September 2001 the Duo opened the concert season at the Israeli Embassy in Washington D. C.; both musicians were also featured in the America-Israel Cultural Foundation Gala in Alice Tully Hall.
The Katz-Shteinberg Duo appeared on tour of Israel and Germany this past November, including a live broadcasted recital at the Jerusalem Music Centre. This performance was later turned into a CD, which awaits its broadcast on the Missouri classical radio station and is currently available online.
